Background

Specializing in regional and southeast artists who are making remarkable contributions in the field of contemporary art, GOAT GALLERY was born during the height of the 2020 pandemic amidst what many considered stressful times. Dozens of local art galleries closed and some were even forced to eventually go out of business. In concert with other arts related institutions, hundreds of galleries and museums nationwide were shuttered which left them relegated to limit their exposure to an online presence and one-on-one appointment only socially distanced events and services. The art world, and life as we knew it, came to a standstill. Galleries and the artists that they represent struggled.

During the first quarter of 2021 worldwide vaccinations became readily available and, although the pandemic was far from over, the world began to slowly return to some form of normalcy. Hope became self-evident versus what seemed like an eternity of Zoom calls and despair. We could see that life, as we previously knew it, was eventually going to return.

Betsy Beaman, owner of GOAT GALLERY and Design Director of her own architectural design practice GOAT DESIGN, has been a practicing architect, contemporary art collector and avid supporter of the arts for over 35 years. Throughout her career, Betsy has led the design of numerous prestigious architectural projects and directed the design of projects related to interiors and other disciplines, including the arts. Drawing upon her expertise in integrated design, she assembles and directs multi-disciplinary teams that produce projects where architecture, art and interiors seamlessly evolve into unified, cohesive total design solutions that achieve new levels of aesthetics and innovation. Betsy has won numerous design awards and her work has been featured in local, national and international design and arts related publications. Public and private clients, including the design and art profession, have taken notice of her projects such as the Art Museum of West Virginia at West Virginia University, Gallery 72 and Gallery 100 in downtown Atlanta and the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University, to name but a few examples. In addition to these completed museum and gallery projects, she designed major expansions to The Atlanta Center for Contemporary Arts and the Atlanta History Center.

Betsy, and her husband Burn, are avid collectors of contemporary art and have been clients of the Marcia Wood Gallery for over 20 years. I was ecstatic to learn that Betsy was opening her own gallery in South Carolina. The couple, who are both architects, have purchased over a dozen works of art from the MWG and these incredible works of art became the primary focal point for their custom contemporary home that they designed and built to house their collection. Artists in their collection include Frances Barth, Radcliffe Bailey, Todd Murphy, Ron Erlich, Scott Eakin, Marcus Kenney, Mary Engel as well as other prominent contemporary artists. Betsy understands the power of place and how art can enhance and also transform our everyday lives. Her background and passion for the arts makes her an excellent candidate to assist clients with their personal and corporate contemporary art work selection needs.
